We’re Champions of Youth-Led Change

Founder's Story

Positive Tracks was founded in 2009, but the truth is, we’re only getting started. The organization continues to evolve every day, shaped by young adults in our sphere, and a small and mighty team.

The story starts with my own sons, and Cam, a nine year-old friend diagnosed with Leukemia. Everyone in our small community of Lyme, New Hampshire, wanted to show big love and support for Cam, so we settled on helping to organize a tribute run in honor of Cam as an added element to an existing Half Marathon benefiting the children’s hospital where Cam was being treated.

The day of the tribute came around. But so did a terrible storm. It rained so hard that the inaugural Cam’s Course lost power and the course was flooded. But a multitude of young people showed up to run for Cam anyway. Hundreds of soaking wet bodies – including those of my sons – crossed the starting line looking proud and strong.

Cam was very sick, but he came too – carried through the finish by the Lyme School principal to the sight and sound of his friends holding hands in a circle and singing because the storm had knocked out the music.

As I stood there in the finish, fully charged by the determination, hope and solidarity all around me, I realized that kids, too—kids especially—want to help when times get tough. And that YOUNG PEOPLE were behind this powerful and physical gesture of love. One small act of compassion had blossomed into large-scale community mobilization and hope. This event had provided a pathway for Cam’s supporters to find hope and agency in the face of something awful. Watching young people take action raised the bar for all of us.

Fast forward fifteen years and it’s amazing to witness what that group of young friends inspired with only a field, their sneakers, and a lot of determination and love. Hope is infectious when we unite together – heart to heart, ear to ear – no matter our background or age.

Today, I’m thrilled to tell you that Cam is a healthy young man, and Positive Tracks is a full-blown, national nonprofit, driven by the belief that young people can change the world and deserve the opportunity to Sweat For Good on their own turf and terms and at no cost to them.

We operate nationally with offices in Hanover, NH and Boston, MA. Since inception, we’ve helped 97,084 young people turn 439,154 miles and 150,782 hours of physical activity into advocacy, activism and $12 million for causes shaping our shared future.

Though I wear the title Founder, I sure didn’t create this alone. Building Positive Tracks took thousands of passionate young people believing in what we do, much generosity from friends and family, and a group of talented, dedicated people, several of whom have been here from the start and are still core to our Team and Board.

Our fundamental goal remains to help young people understand that they can make the world better with exactly what they already have inside of themselves: enthusiasm, creativity, and love for humanity.

In sweat and solidarity,
